BOXiD, Round III - A fundraising exhibition organised by Black Church Print Studio. BOXiD Round III features anonymous, CD-sized works by more than 150 well-known and emerging Irish and International artists including James English, Brian Lalor, Pauline Bewick, Yoko Akino, Liam Belton, Abigail O' Brien, Donald Teskey, Richard Gorman, Mark Garry, Comhghall Casey, John Shinnors, Charlie Whisker, Susan Sex, the members of the Black Church Print Studio, and many others. All artists were invited to generously donate one-off works in CD format (12 x 12 cms) for this fundraiser. The artist's identity will only be revealed after a work is purchased. Each work is unique and will sell for just €50.

All work will be available to view on the 31 August at the No Grants Gallery, Temple Bar Cultural Trust, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar from 12 - 4pm. Opening/ drinks reception from 6 - 8 pm. Sales strictly from 6 pm. The exhibition runs 31 August - 1 September 2011.

All proceeds will go directly towards funding the ongoing artistic programme at Black Church Print Studio including exhibitions, visiting artists and studio residencies. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Live Drawing at NCAD Gallery drawing Project

"Archimedes Last Drawing"

Dates: 7th – 25th June
Launch: Friday 10th June (alongside NCAD degree show)

‘Archimedes’ Last Drawing’ is a collaborative drawing project and exhibition by recent graduates of NCAD Francis Quinn and Fintan Ryan. The project will take place over two weeks at the NCAD Gallery, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8. The project will be centred around a monumental drawing, which will be created throughout the run of the exhibition. Five recent graduates of the National college of Art and Design(INCLUDING MY GOOD SELF!) have been invited to take part in the project. Each artist will spend a day working on the drawing and all seven artist will return to work together on the final day of the project. The gallery will be open to the public during the entire project, giving visitors the oportunity to see the artists at work and witness the development of the drawing over time.

Myself and Ella Bertilsson will be doing our live drawings this Wednesday June 8th.

These prints are tiny (on 4x7cm paper) and i had to etch them under a magnafine glass.
The Juror awarded the 3 prints an honorable mention, which is great news.

Joining our four story tellers Eleonore Nicolas, Nina Tanis, Michael Phelan and Fiona Dowling from Story O, will be Raúl Mv, Killian Dunne and Kevin Bohan from Blind Elephant Illustration Collective.

This exciting event combining live illustration and storytelling is not to be missed!

"Story O started off as 5 friends who met once a month to cook together and tell stories. They were having so much delight that they thought they owe to spread the joy and share it with you. While their love to perform and elicit laughter mixed with their sense of play and fun brought them together, each of them can bring you on different journeys: Fiona tells you about all the colours of love, Eleonore prescribes stories to cure the symptoms of our time, Michael will wrap you around his little finger with tales where the grotesque and the sublime go hand in hand, Nina will share her love for humanity while Adam will fool you into thinking you´ve heard it all before and next thing you´ll be laughing uncontrollably. Come, sit, relax for an hour or for few minutes. They love travelling with their audiences!!!"

Blind Elephant Collective are a group of artists from various backgrounds who came together to create unique illustrations.
Raúl Mv is a graphic designer interested in all sorts of media and visual languages.

Killian Dunne is a Dublin based freelance illustrator and print maker. He graduated from N.C.A.D in 2009 and is a member of the BlackChurch Print Studio. His illustrations have been published in the Dublin Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bizarre Magazine and WallPapers City Guide to Dublin.

Kevin Bohan graduated from Bolton St. DIT with a diploma in Print Management & Technology in 1996, worked in printing for 11 years before dropping out to study Graphic design and illustration. He is currently working in the design and layout department of a national newspaper and studying Web design full time.

Draw the Line is a contemporary printmaking and drawing exhibition, curated by Dr. Ruth Pelzer-Montada, Printmaker and Lecturer in
Visual Culture and Theory at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland. This exhibition is organised by the Black Church Print Studio, Dublin.

Drawing and printmaking have been closely associated throughout history, yet they share a clear delineation in their ancestry; in
drawing’s case, its independence is rectified by the fact that, since the Renaissance, it was regarded as the foundation of the traditional
arts. Concurrently, the role of printmaking in cultural life has been strengthened by its natural displacement towards the dissemination
of cultural and scientific knowledge. In the past fifty years, both disciplines have arguably moved from a subsidiary to an instructive
position in the arts. As with a great many current art forms, these two now broadly encompass previously disparate practices such
as installation, video, digital image modes, animation and three-dimensional work. Processes and images which in one context are
categorised as drawings may well be regarded as prints in another. This exhibition examines printmaking and its relationship with
drawing. Its aim is not to define or fix boundaries, but to reveal similarities, overlaps and differences. Such explorations are vital at
a time when arts education is seeing its former disciplinary boundaries abolished, and the different practices of art are increasingly
expected to intersect. So where do we differentiate between drawing and printmaking? Within the act of printmaking, drawing is
always indirectly ‘removed’, due to the presence of its matrix, in the form of a plate, screen or stone. Print techniques can weaken or
subvert the traditional connection of drawing with the hand by their affinity with and reliance on mechanical processes. Today, certain
techniques within drawing appear to bring it closer together with printmaking. Here, there has been an increase in the incorporation
of photography, or of imported ‘ready-made’ gestures and forms. Conversely, there are techniques now employed by printmakers that
imbue the surface of the print with haptic qualities, such as embossing or collaging, which move printmaking towards established or
new modes of drawing. So it is reasonable to ask whether print may retrieve the tactility that many drawings now lack, or intentionally
suppress? And by emphasising print’s material qualities, do these techniques also reduce fears of an inhuman cultural environment?

‘PUT A LID ON IT’

Galway Arts Centre is delighted to announce the opening of their upcoming pop-up exhibition, ‘Put a Lid on It’. The opening is on Tuesday 23rd November at 6pm and runs for four days only until Saturday 27th. Curated by Siobhán McGibbon and Zulaikha Engelbrecht, visual artists and current Visual Arts Assistants at Galway Arts Centre, the exhibition features the work of over fifty artists from around the country.

Each artist was asked to address the space within a jar and to create new work specifically for the exhibition. This was an opportunity for artists of any medium to work within the boundaries of a small space. This curatorial strategy produced exciting and unexpected work which showcases the diversity of contemporary art in Galway and Ireland today.

The exhibition presents a diverse group of artists, ranging from established practitioners such as Lynne O’Loughlin to emerging artists and promising new talent. Brett Hartman, currently a student at Colaiste Iognaid and current Galway Arts Centre artist-in-residence Majella Dowdican are featured, as well as well known Galway artists Lisa Sweeney and Ruth le Gear. Maeve Curtis, visual artist and teacher presents work made in collaboration with Rehabcare Resource Centre Casla.

So please come and enjoy a lovely evening of wine, conversation and art this coming Tuesday 23rd November. This is the perfect opportunity to start your art collection, as all works are affordable, with the highest being €100. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.

Exhibition Info:

Bluewall gallery presents ‘Unframed’, a multidisciplinary group show of 31 artists on Sat 27 November to Wed 22 December with an opening reception Saturday 27 November 3pm- 5pm. The commonality of this span of disciplines lies in the lack of finishing or framing devices in the collected works.

The Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1893-1955) stated; ‘a picture without a frame has the air about it of a naked, despoiled man. Its contents seem to spill out over the four sides of the canvas and dissolve into the atmosphere.’ In this spirit, the works may be in-progress, preliminary adventures, unresolved quandaries, bearers of greater unseen fruits or simple honest truths.

The artists are:

"City West Side Story"

Here is some props and program design I did for the play "City West Side Story", written by and staring Eleanor Tiernan, Fred Cooke and Nicola Gainey. The play was part of the Dublin Fringe Festival and was performed in Bewely's Cafe Theatre. It will be performed again on Oct 22nd in the Town Hall Theatre Studio, Galway as part of the Galway Comedy Festival.

We will have some more photo's soon on the Turbo Monthly Blog of other props and back drops myself, Ella and Aisling designed. The Irish Independant described the play as "An absolute must see...the highlight of the Dublin Theatre Festival"

FTLO OFFSET

Here is a piece made by myself and Isolde Gordon for the "FTLO OFFSET" exhibition in South Studios which was part of Offset2010. Artists/creatives were invited to submit collaborative pieces made from second hand objects.

We bought this desk in a charity shop, drew on the lid and filled the inside with individual pieces to be rummaged through. Three of these pieces(one of which is pictured above) were bought by graphic design legend David Carson who was in town to give a talk at Offset2010.

Here is my print I made for the Black Church Print Studio and Hot Bed Press print Exchange/Exhibition. 20 artists from each studio make a print editioned as 24 for a group show in Salford, after the show each artist receives a hand made pack of every print involved. Cannot wait to get my pack as I have seen some of the other Black Church prints involved and they look amazing.

Here is the image I made for the front cover of "Faceless Monsters" the new book by The Atlantis collective. Its made from an old photo I found in a tiny shop in France. The book is being launched with live readings in Massimo's Pub Galway on the 23rd of April at 6pm and has art work on the wall by myself and my Turbo Monthly colleagues Ella and Aisling.

In a mixed media show heavily influenced by the printing process three Black Church artists: Tomasz Knapik, Ella Bertilsson and Killian Dunne will respond to the shows title. Each artist shall create an individual piece entitled “He Wants Revenge” presented with a series of works that take influence from the show’s title as well as their own practices.

Ella Bertilsson creates raw, autobiographical work that reveals the underbelly of Swedish society. Far from the popular image of Swedish society as eminently reasonable and sedate, Ella’s work layers personal memories of a place or person with passed on stories.
These narratives offer fleeting glimpses of a chaotic sub-culture, while others, a more personal glimpse of loved ones lost. Her ability to get under the skin of society allows for deeply personal and thought provoking work.

Killian Dunne’s work concentrates on anonymity and history in relation to the constant. Family trees, conflict, myth, religion, evolution, and superstition are blended into peculiar narratives where conflicting philosophies blur together.

The First World War is of particular importance to his practice, the link and breaking point between an old and new world. Where modernity and myth collide, Arthur Conan Doyle’s fairies coexist with bomber airplanes and ectoplasm coexists with mustard gas.

Tomasz Knapik is a visual artist working in the field of printmaking and graphic design. His creative process involves the overlapping of these closely
related media.

Through this process he attempts to organise and give structure to the often chaotic nature of his emotional response to reality. This results in an autobiographical interpretation of relations between people and places distilled by subjective nature of memory affected by time and his imagination. He explores the past in an attempt to find the balance of all things through a journey of self-discovery and self-expression.

Here is a collaboration piece made by myself and Ella Bertilsson: Super Hero's V's Dolly Parton. They are some Matryoshka Dolls we bought and painted over, they were part of the 'SiKSjO' Exhibition.
The Super Hero's are supposed to be keep sakes of the super hero soldiers in the prints from the previous post I made. The 5 Dolly Partons are Dolly through the last 5 decades (the 2nd Dolly to the left is Playboy Dolly).

"Mail Me Art is a British-based project, run by Darren Di Lieto, the founder and co-editor of the illustration news portal the Little Chimp Society. Over the course of a year, the first Mail Me Art project brought together a vast collection of artistic work sent in the form of mail by both professional and amateur artists of all ages from across the world. A wide variety of media were used in an equally wide variety of styles and the work arrived on everything from postcards and envelopes to boxes and pieces of wood.

Contributions included work by internationally-renowned illustrators such as Dan May, Michael Slack, Jon Burgerman, Kristian Olson, Catalina Estrada and Jeff Miracola and in total there were in excess of 600 pieces of mail art submitted to the project.

Mail Me Art culminated in the publication of the book Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers and the exhibition, held in London during April 2009.

We are planning to propose a follow up book, possibly called Mail Me More Art, and if we have half as many submissions as the first Mail Me Art project did we will run another exhibition. Ella Bertilsson, Aisling Ni Chonraoi, and Killian Dunne graduated from N.C.A.D’s print department in 2009.
Ella Bertilsson is a member of the Black Church Print Studios and was selected for Monster Trucks ‘Neu’ selected graduate exhibition 2009. Her Graduate show video piece has since been shown at Four Gallery, The RDS Student Awards, Norrlandsoperan(Sweden) and Corbet Place(London)
Aisling Ni Chonraoi won ‘The Print Makers Gallery Award’ and an ‘AXA Insurance Award at the N.C.A.D graduate show 2009. Her animation video was selected for the Digital Hub’s ‘Best in Show ‘ Exhibition and was shown at the RDS Student Awards 2009. She is currently undertaking her fine art post graduate studies at N.C.A.D.
Killian Dunne won the ‘Tyrone Guthrie Award’ at the RDS Student Awards 2009 and the ‘Black Church Student Award’ at the N.C.A.D graduate show. His prints from the show have since been shown at the RDS Art Fair and at The Turn Gallery(Berlin).

Van Gogh Apocalypse Action Figure at FTLO

My little blurb: Dodgy poorly researched conspiracy theories(especially about the end of the world in 2012) are everywhere these days so I made this action figure in homage to their hilarity. Van Gogh and his fellow harshly treated historical figures turn up in 2012 to get revenge by ending the world 4 horse men style.

The figure is a converted wrestling action figure and his box(I painted him ginger, put a bandage around his head, glued on photo shopped van gogh imagery).

Sadly 'This is not a shop' is closing down this Sunday after 4 years. Before they shut their doors for good they are having their '3rd Annual Christmas art fair'. Artists were invited to hang any piece they desired and sell it commission free. So as you can imagine the gallery is stuffed with work(including my 'Oh Fringe' digital print).

The show runs: Thur 17th 2-9pm, Fri 18th 2-10pm, Sat 19th 12-7pm.
